Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground fighting art.

With Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu most techniques involve both fighters being on the ground. There is heavy emphasis on positional strategies. (placement of the body and legs) A large variety of attacks and defenses are available to both fighters, once a preferable position or “stable situation” is achieved.

Royce Gracie working with Conrad Foust in Jiu-Jitsu classSpecific techniques are taught either to improve one’s position (for example, to “pass the guard” by going from being “in the guard” to getting around the opponent’s legs, resulting in side control) or to apply a finishing submission. Most submissions are either chokes or arm locks.

In other martial arts where striking is the primary focus, most people cannot train with 100% intensity due to the rate of injury. However, in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, students can be trained without injury while utilizing a maximum effort. This course teaches the value of position and the knowledge of when the submission is achieved so that there is no injury to the participants.

At Forged Fitness we are lucky enough to have 2 of the legendary Royce Gracie Black Belts as instructors.   Both Jason Culbreth and Billy Dowey have been studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 15 years.  These two outstanding instructors have been the primary influence on MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in North Carolina.  With the number #1 competition team in the state,  there is no question Forged Fitness/Team-ROC is the best!

Thanks for the very inviting atmosphere at your academy this week. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I learned a few things from you and Roy, and had a fun and friendly roll with L.C.

Your academy is what I wish many others were: serious, yet willing to train with an outsider without having the need to demolish. At no time did I feel that I was in anyone’s “BJJ crosshairs.”

Your academy is a testimony to how BJJ should be taught. Your instruction is very clear, and your ability to answer “rank appropriate” quesions for the same technique is remarkable. As the “more experienced” people in the room, Larry and I had different questions from the white/blue belts, yet you were able to provide us with the answers without neglecting the lower ranking people.

I thoroughly recommend your academy to everyone, regardless of their perceived level of experience. Thanks again for allowing me on your mats.
